A Message From VP of Scholarship: Rishab Malhotra

The chapter has recognized a few significant problems in regards to academics, and a lot of steps and precautions are being put in place to fix them. Since Spring 2006, the semester since the chapter got off of dry housing, the GPA has fell approximately 10% (See below). Last Semester the chapter GPA was a 2.77, about 0.2 points below All Men's, and close to the bottom in terms of Greek organizations. While a 2.77 may not seem so bad, 15 of the 24 brothers who counted towards the Fall 2007 GPA with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above, will not count towards the GPA by Fall 2008 - either due to Co-op, graduation, or having de-brothered. If everyone else keeps the same production, the chapter GPA is projected to be a 2.56, and the chapter will have action taken by IFC as well as Georgia Tech. Using the Fall 2007 Semesterly GPA, GPA were calculated for 1st - 5th years, as well as by pledge class. The numbers are alarming. The 5th years made a 3.06 collectively and the 1st years a 2.6. Every year in between dropped almost linearly with the exception of the 2 years who made a 2.51. The younger brothers are not cutting academically.

Fall 2007 Fraternity GPA: 2.77
All mens was approximately a 2.95
Greek GPA on campus was >> 2.95

Below is a Histogram Distribution of Fall 2007 GPA's.

What has been done / What is going to be done?
    1. The study was redone.
    2. Study hours are offered 12 Hours a week. 19 Brothers who made under a 2.4 were assigned mandatory study hours by Judicial Board ranging anywhere from 2 - 10 Hours a week.
    3. Older brothers in a few Majors have volunteered to tutor the younger brothers in their classes.
    4. Quiet Hours are now enforced.
    5. Groups are being set up and will be sent to either 1 on 1 Tutoring, or OMED Tutoring.
    6. A Scholarship manual is going to be written, so the next scholarship chair can pick up where I left off (I graduate this semester)

What can Alumni do?
    1. Come and speak to the chapter about the importance of academics.
    2. Help set up a scholarship fund for prospective rushees
    3. Donate to the educational fund - The chapter needs new computers for the study as well as a new whiteboard.

Fraternally,

Rishab Malhotra
